Ammons Grave Restoration wants to help keep family memorials looking great for many years. One way we can do this is through education. Today, we want to discuss the importance of reducing damage related to those tiny little insects called ANTS. We’ve been told they can carry much more than their weight and how they can move a lot of earth when working together. Well, it is the truth. A colony of ants can rapidly undermine a cemetery lot and cause it to become very unstable, resulting in shifting of the headstones and coping around the lot. They can also cause depressions to form within the lot. The instability is a direct result of the tunnels that are built under the surface that creates voids in the ground. During heavy rains or high moisture, some of these tunnels collapse, and the ground drops a little bit. The ants form new tunnels and repeat the process. In a short time, the ground has become very soft and no longer can support the weight of the headstone or coping on the surface. If the coping or headstone becomes unstable enough, it can break or, in the case of a headstone, sink enough and slide off of its supporting base. Treating the area for ants is a great and simple way to help eliminate this threat to a grave site. It is very important to treat any mounds as soon as you first notice them to prevent major damage from occurring. First of all, the saddles only have rubber on a small portion of the wire. As a result, after being exposed to rain and other environmental conditions, the wire will rust. The rust will then leave stains on the granite or even marble that is often impossible to get completely removed. We strongly discourage family members and others from using high pressure washers to clean any kind of stones.
Marble is particularly delicate and is severely damaged with chemicals and high pressure. As durable and long lasting as Granite stone is, chemicals and pressurized water can very easily harm the polished surface and cause irreparable damage that can only be fixed by replacing the stone. We have developed several gentle ways of restoring stone work through years of experience and following guidelines set in place by the U.S. National Park Service. We do not use any acids or bleach products on stones we are working on. Our company also uses a specially developed soft wash that uses water volume over high pressure for safe rinsing.
